• A Grade Division 1
A CENTURY to wicket keeper-batsman Walter Taberner has guided Inverloch to a solid first innings total of 7/247 against Leongatha Town in A Grade Division 1.
The day didn’t get off to an excellent start for Inverloch as the promoted Will Rankin was bowled for just four runs by Town’s Yashas Alwis and number three batsman Nathan Brayley was forced to retire hurt early in his innings after snapping his achillies tendon taking off for a single.
With two batsmen already in the sheds, experienced pair Brett Debono and Dave Newman tried to get Inverloch back on track, before Debono was run out for 28 and Newman, 32, was caught off the bowling of Madura Madusanka leaving the Stingrays 3/74.
And when Scorpions captain Matt Davies struck with the wicket of Tom McQualter for just nine, Inverloch were 4/101 and on the back foot.
Taberner survived a big appeal and then took control of the innings with superb cricket shots to get his side back into a positive position, linking up with captain Kit Rotthier for a 74 run partnership.
Being eventually run out for 118, Inverloch will be pleased with his return to form.
Yashas Alwis was the pick of the Town bowlers claiming 2/40 off 11 overs.
Wonthaggi Club has posted an impressive first innings total of 9/349 against Kilcunda-Bass off the back of an impressive knock of 93 from number eight Daniel Turton.
Contributions came across the board for Club with Ryan Thomas 74, Mitch Thomas 41 and Dave Britt 39 all getting in the runs.
But the returning Turton was the star of the show smashing 93 runs after spending the last few games in B Grade.
Stephen Leman 2/39 and Andrew Donohue 2/54 did the work for Bass in what was a long day in the field.
OMK have also posted a handy first innings total of 8/236 in their match against Korumburra.
Captain Daniel Mock top scored with 82 along with English import Callum Honeyman who managed 60.
The Cobras didn’t do a lot wrong with the ball with Shane Dole claiming 3/46 and Tom Richards 2/55.
Glen Alvie scraped together a first innings total of 153 in their clash with Phillip Island.
Charith Keerthisinghe was a workhorse for the Island bowling 27 overs and claiming 3/35 along with Matt Dennerley who took 3/26.
For the Alvie it was small contributions from Daniel Diwell 37 and Daniel Hales 26 who did their best for the struggling top order.
Wightman stars for Red Caps
• A Grade Division 2
TIM WIGHTMAN has continued his impressive form for Nerrena this season posting a superb century as the Red Caps set a first innings total of 9/316 against Foster in A grade Division 2.
Wightman, who has been terrific with the ball in recent weeks, turned his attention to the bat smashing 144 runs including 16 fours and two sixes.
Veteran Damien Symmons also chipped in with 49 runs in a solid first innings performance.
For Foster it was Jimmy Sparkes 3/50 and Harvey Griggs 3/78 who did the damage with the ball.
The Leongatha Imperials have got themselves into an attacking position against the Wonthaggi Miners after an impressive spell of bowling from Mark Lafferty saw the Miners all out for 174.
Lafferty claimed 6/61 off his 25 overs and paired with 4/47 from Zac Price the Imperials sit nicely in the driver’s seat.
Cam Thomas scored 45 at the top of the order and 27 from Paul Nelson were the highlights in a rather modest total from the Miners.
Poowong-Loch has made a terrific start to their clash with MDU, bowling the Demons out for 144.
Jacob Bardwell 3/38 and Alan Jenkins 3/41 did the Damage for Poowong who have become a force in A Grade Division 2 this season.
Cam Olden was the top run scorer for MDU with 29 runs on what was a below par score for the Demons.
Poowong used the remaining 20 overs in the day to begin their run chase with the Bardwell brothers Aaron and Jacob getting the score to 0/50 before Jacob was caught off the bowling off Cam Harris for 36.
Aaron remains unbeaten on 26 with captain Wilson Pollock on 11 with the score reading 1/74.
