THE TOP Victorian junior surfers began their path to glory this weekend with the Surf Dive ‘N Ski Australian Junior Surfing Titles getting under way in Culburra, NSW.
Eight local Bass Coast surfers are competing in the event including; Taj Sleeman (Wonthaggi), Sophie Fletcher, Lannia Fostin, Daisy Corbett, Sage Goldsbury, Ravi Fostin, Poppy Corbett (Cape Woolamai) and Codie Jeffery (Newhaven).
Victorian High Performance Coaching Director Cahill Bell-Warren is looking forward to building on the success of last year’s event at Phillip Island.
“The Surfing Victoria Performance Division has been working hard to ensure that our incredible results at 2016 aren’t in isolation, and that we can continue to show our depth and elite talent on the national stage.
“We have set some really strong training plans and procedures in place over the last 12 months and I am really looking forward to giving our athletes the best opportunity to achieve both individually and as a team.”
Six states are being represented at the titles across under 14, 16 and 18 age groups in both boys and girls’ divisions at the event that is considered the benchmark of junior surfing in the country.
With past winners including World Champions Steph Gilmore, Chelsea Hedges, Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Mark Richards, Tom Carroll and Damian Hardman, a win at this year’s event is a legitimate stepping stone to world stage glory.
Opening heats have commenced with the finals to be on Saturday, December 2.
