HAVE you got out of control weeds, such as blackberries or ragwort, on your property?
Assets manager for Arawata Landcare group Peter Westgate encourages rural landholders to make use of spray trailers to eradicate weeds and decrease the likelihood of seeds spreading.
Two spray trailers, owned by the Arawata Landcare group, have recently been fixed up and are now in tip top running condition and available to be picked up from MG Trading in Leongatha and Korumburra. The trailers are well equipped with large tanks and long hoses, ideal for reaching difficult to access areas, and they can be hired at a cost of $20 for three days.
Herbicides must be purchased separately and Landcare recommends Grazon and Associate as these sprays are friendly to natives, meaning overspray won’t kill native grass or plants.
Peter also encourages locals to join their local Landcare group and share in the benefits of seasonal meetings (held on the first Wednesday of the season), which feature guest speakers and information based around improving the land, including information on weeds and when you should be spraying.
Arawata Landcare group is currently working on eradicating an outbreak of Pittosporum at Wild Dog Valley (Hamann’s Bush) Reserve. The group recently held a working bee to remove some of the invasive plants, which are threatening native species, but they’ve had to take extra care in the eradication process so as not to disturb the lyrebirds that were recently discovered in the Reserve.
