INVERLOCH were crowned the Section 1 champions of the Allambee Mirboo and District Tennis Association, but it wasn’t the way they’d hoped to do it.
The grand finals were scheduled to take place in Leongatha on Saturday but the rain forced all matches to be postponed until Sunday.
Just before noon on Sunday, minutes before play was due to start, word spread around the clubrooms that the Phillip Island team wouldn’t be showing up.
A statement from the association summed up the thoughts of all present.
“Only one word for this: Disappointing.”
In Section 2, Berrys Creek 7.64 defeated Outtrim 2.37.
Berrys Creek have been the top team all season and the grand final went their way. Outtrim played well in all the sets but couldn’t take the games. Well done to all players.
SECTION 3: Leongatha Nadal 3.42 defeated
Leongatha Federer 4.36.
This was the best match of the grand finals. Maybe Leongatha Nadal can thank Jo Eady as the steadying influence on the team of young players.
The first boys set was a tiebreaker with Leongatha Federer winning.
Jo and Taylor, mother and daughter, played well to win the ladies set.
The singles went a set each way.
The games were level before the last set. Leongatha Nadal won the set and the grand final by six games. Well done to Aiden Pouw, winning all his sets.
The association has quite a few mother and daughter combinations and a couple of father and son combinations too.
The presentation night was held at the Outtrim Hall on Saturday night and was well attended.
The Outtrim club did themselves proud with the meal of hot meats, potatoes, coleslaw and all the trimmings. The damper was a big hit too. Well done!
As the grand finals were washed out earlier in the day, trophies were awarded to the tournament winners and the most games won throughout the season.
Most games won:
• Section 1: Men Matt Pocklington, Ladies Ange Williams.
• Section 2: Men Sean Fraser, Ladies Susan Clark.
• Section 3: Men Adam Watchorn, Ladies Taylor Mitchell.
A good season was had by all clubs.
Outtrim, as the host club have to be happy with the season. Enjoy the off season and look forward to the 2018-2019 season.
