RESIDENTS of Leongatha’s Koorooman House were treated to a very special performance on the weekend, when the cast of Lyric Theatre’s latest production paid a visit.
The Koorooman House residents were the first to get a taste of Lyric’s production of ‘Annie’ which is set to open in Leongatha on July 6.
Led by musical director Dan Moldrich, 15 young cast members sang their hearts out on Sunday, performing several songs from the well known and loved musical, to the delight of the elderly residents and their visiting family members and friends.
Director Kerryn Lockhart also introduced Grace Farmer, who will be playing the title role, in her first time on stage in a Lyric Theatre production.
Showing that her singing lessons with Kerryn are paying off, experienced dancer Grace performed ‘Maybe’ solo, before teaming up with Oliver ‘Daddy’ Warbucks (Tim Gesell) for a charming performance of ‘I don’t need anything but you’.
Even the canine star of the show, Sandy (Remmi Hemming), made an appearance, watching on with a wagging tail.
Nurse Rachel Cameron said performances, especially of the musical variety, “break up and brighten the day” for residents, and Mrs Giuseppina (Josie) Pucci seemed to agree, praising the young cast members and declaring that they “should sing at La Scala” the famous opera house in Milan.
Resident Lorna Satchwell said the performance was “beautiful” and a real treat for residents who aren’t able to leave the facility to attend shows.
“We don’t have many performances like this. It’s something different and it’s very entertaining,” she said.
Lyric’s production manager Anne Hemming says Annie’s 45 cast members are “all set” for opening night, and wanted to take the opportunity to share their talents with members of the community who might not be able to attend shows at Mesley Hall.
“Preparations are going really well, and we just wanted to provide some entertainment for the elderly. We know they love kids and they love seeing the dog as well. We’re grateful we can give something back.”
