A number of your articles from last week (July 3) discuss aspects of rates we pay to the South Gippsland Shire Council.
l don’t think it is deliberately confusing but various figures and calculations are put forward by those wishing to state their case.
What does seem clear, as one councillor is quoted, is South Gippslanders pay in the top three highest commercial, industrial and farm rates in Gippsland and the highest residential rates in Gippsland.
South Gippsland’s residential rates is, in fact, 50 per cent higher for the same value property, as those in neighbouring Bass Coast.
Our council plan commits to a 3 per cent reduction in our rates but thus far we have only seen increases.
Most larger organisations, especially government, have the opportunity to make efficiency savings. Our South Gippsland Shire Council should make the promised rate reductions and cut the cloth to suit the measure before an administrator is appointed.
