THE Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre will soon feature a 6m x 3m artwork above its windows.
And there is even the chance of another smaller artwork if more funding can be secured.
The Wonthaggi Business and Tourism Association will auspice the project, for artist Brett Ashby’s proposed artwork.
It’s set to be a mixed media piece, following art workshops with the community.
Although the redevelopment works inside the centre are completed, the artwork’s expected to improve the external look of the building.
The association received $3000 through a local council grant for the project, and was last week approved an additional $4000.
The additional funds had been sitting within council reserves and were a contribution from the Dan Murphy’s development; set aside to be used for public art within Wonthaggi.
Brett is seeking an additional $20,000 for the project, through the State Government’s Pick My Project scheme.
Dee Connell of the Wonthaggi Business and Tourism Association says Brett is a fantastic artist.
“We really want to bring more artwork into the town,” she said last week.
“Then we can continue to make Wonthaggi more of a tourist destination.”
At a recent council meeting, Cr Clare Le Serve said the project will add value to the refurbishment of the centre.
“It seems only to be a small amount, but I think we will get great community benefit from it,” she said of the additional $4000.
