THE Bass Coast Breakers have completed the perfect season, finishing the South Eastern Women’s Football League division 2 season undefeated and taking home the premiership in a thrilling 14-point win over Tyabb.
Wet and muddy conditions at the Holmes Park reserve made for a hard-fought contest with slightest of errors proving costly.
It was not great footy by any means, but the excitement and tension around the ground, and the close result, made for a nail biting game.
Nerves were certainly evident in the first quarter from both sides, and it was clear from the outset that it would be a low scoring and close match.
The Breakers finished the first quarter in the lead with 1.1.7 to Tyabb’s 0.2.2.
Following a quarter time pep talk from coach Steve Kenny, the Breakers came out firing in the second.
The Breakers stretched their lead with a pair of valuable goals and looked to be in full control with a 15-point lead at half time.
But the Yabbies were far from dead, controlling what felt like all the play in the third.
But unlike the Breakers, Tyabb couldn’t find the goals with a whopping eight behinds on the scoreboard.
And in the blink of an eye the Breakers had stolen the ball, gone coast to coast and threaded their third goal of the game.
A comfortable 25-point lead in the torrid conditions and the girls felt as if they were home, but the comfort didn’t last long.
Tyabb began the last quarter with a fire in their bellies and kicked two extremely quick goals to get things going.
Bass Coast’s lead was now only seven points with plenty of time left for a Tyabb victory.
But with the pain of last year’s defeat still bottled inside them, the girls found their feet and lifted to kick one last goal and secure the premiership.
Bass Coast Breakers ruck Kelly O’Neill had a fantastic match, taking several exceptional marks in difficult conditions and controlling the game in the midfield.
She was awarded best on ground by the umpires and received a rousing ovation from her teammates.
In 2019 the Breakers will be stepping up to Division 1, an incredible effort for what will be their third year as a team.
The Breakers would like to extend a special thanks to their sponsors for all their support during the 2018 season.
