IT’S official: Korumburra’s Middle Hotel is the best Keno venue in Australia.
Following their win at state level late last year, the Middle team travelled up to the Gold Coast last week to attend the Australian Hotels Association’s National Awards for Excellence, where they beat out finalists from each state and territory to claim the top honour.
Ash Verdon works behind the bar at The Middle and said the team were still in shock in the days following the win.
“It still feels a bit surreal. We never expected to win because we’re such a little pub and it’s a pretty big trophy to hold,” she said.
“But I think we’ve definitely gotten more confident and knowledgeable about Keno in the last two years. You can ask the staff anything and they’ll know the answer. And we’ve got a really good clientele of customers who love it.”
Publican Troy Patterson said the win was a very proud moment for The Middle, and he praised Ash for all her hard work in getting the venue up to award-winning standard.
“Ash has done a fantastic job in terms of our execution. We’ve always got the right posters up, and make sure customers are aware of new things,” he said.
Though the national award is an unprecedented achievement, it’s certainly not the first time The Middle’s been recognised as an outstanding venue.
In recent years, the pub has consistently made the state finals in Australian Hotels Association’s best bistro, best gaming room and best Keno venue competitions, and was named Victoria’s best bistro in 2015.
