PEOPLE in Melbourne’s middle and outer suburbs are embracing solar at the highest levels across the state and saving on energy bills with the sun.
Last year was the biggest year on record for solar installations across Australia.
And in Victoria, panels were most likely to be popping up in the postcodes in a ring around Melbourne.
Cranbourne and Truganina topped the solar charts with about 7000 installations each.
Derrimut and Werribee came next with approaching 6000 installs between them, followed by the northern suburbs of Craigieburn and Donnybrook, together topping 4300. Burnside was fifth with just under 4000 solar systems installed.
They are some of the more than 1.8 million homes across Australia now generating their own power from the sun, a world-leading figure per capita.
In response to new Victorian Government solar rebates, a further 14,000 additional Victorians have now registered to join the march to solar power.
Households with a joint income of less than $180,000 per year can now claim back half the cost of solar panels, up to $2225, until June 30 next year. The rebates are only available to owner-occupiers with homes valued at less than $3 million.
The average household is expected to save up to $890 per year on their energy bills with a 4kw system. Those receiving a rebate can expect to repay the cost of the solar panels through savings in about five years.
“The Solar Homes program will help 720,000 households cut their energy bills with either solar panels, solar hot water systems or solar batteries,” said the Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Ms Lily D’Ambrosio.
Confirmation of your eligibility for a rebate can only be provided by Solar Victoria. Residents should ensure they have checked their eligibility for the program, and that of their proposed installer, before signing a contract.
Rebates are only available for quality approved products, installed by accredited installers, and all interested residents are encouraged to check the Solar Victoria website if they are contacted about solar deals they don’t trust.
Solar Victoria was established by the Victorian Government to deliver the Solar Homes Package.
Residents can apply for eligibility, learn more about the rebates or seek accredited solar installers through Solar Victoria, by visiting solar.vic.gov.au.
