THE South Gippsland Bass Swimming Club has been named Optus Club of the Year, with swimmers erupting in a roar of applause and screams when it was announced by Swimming Australia on Friday night.
The announcement was televised live from the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC), with the club over-the-moon to get national recognition.
The club has expressed sincere gratitude to Swimming Australia, Gippsland Swimming and Swimming Victoria.
President Lorraine Muir has thanked all the swimmers, coaches, parents and the local community for their support, as well as major sponsors’ Aquasure, Watersure and Narellan Pools Gippsland.
She also extended gratitude to the South Gippsland and Bass Coast shire councils, YMCA South Gippsland SPLASH, YMCA Wonthaggi, Leongatha RSL and RACV Inverloch Resort for their support.
“To say I’m proud of the club is an understatement,” said Lorraine after the ceremony.
“The little club from South Gippsland being named the best in Australia is amazing, and it’s been a team effort from current swimmers, committee, parents and coaches to those in those roles who helped lay the foundations on which we are built on today.”
Lorraine said the club, established in 1999 was still “young and learning” but with “an amazing team of coaches, a strong committee, active and committed parents, and an amazing group of swimmers,” was continually striving to be the best it could be.
“Our biggest growth has occurred within the last 12 -15 months,” said Lorraine.
“This has seen us learning on the run. It’s been an exciting time with challenges met head on.
“The quality of our programs and swimmer support in and out of the pool has always been our focus.
“We learn as we grow, provide opportunities whenever and where ever possible to all our members.”
