A SAN Remo man who saved a fisherman’s life with an esky is one of eight Victorians who received a bravery medal last week.
Ben Dennis was awarded a bronze medal by the Royal Humane Society of Australia for rescuing a man after he fell into the fast-moving current at the Newhaven Jetty.
And the fisherman who he saved – Ilija Pivac – now classifies December 11 as his birthday.
He says it’s well worth celebrating every year for the rest of his life, because it could’ve all ended on that day a little over two years ago.
Ilija was fishing with a friend at the jetty when he fell in at around 7pm.
Ilija didn’t know how to swim and neither did his friend.
He was quickly being swept away with the strong Western Port tide.
Ben, now the founder of a restaurant near the Newhaven Jetty, was quick to act.
