THE Wonthaggi Secondary College’s Intermediate Boys basketball team reached the state school final recently and went within a whisker of winning it.
The boys travelled to MSAC (Melbourne Sport and Aquatic Centre) to compete in the finals.
Their first game was against Berwick SC and after being behind for most of the game the boys just got over the Berwick boys with some really tough defence. Final scores were 50 to 48.
The second game saw the boys come up against Box Hill SC which has a reputation of having one of the best basketball programs in the state for school basketball.
The WSC team established a lead early in the game and this proved too much for the Box Hill team to pull back. Wonthaggi’s win put them into the state final against Bendigo South East College. Final scores 52 to 42.
The state final game was always going to be a tough ask for the Wonthaggi boys who only had a seven-man team and the heat had taken a fair bit out of them.
They started well with Alex and Jenson running the floor and scoring some easy lay ups.
Keith Robinson was a focal point during the game and scored at ease through the first half.
Zac Reid had his hands full with a larger, stronger player posting him up inside and causing a few headaches for the team defensively.
The second half was a tightly fought contest with the teams going score for score and it looked like the game was going to come down to the wire.
Bendigo got themselves into foul trouble in the last minute so each time Wonthaggi was fouled, they went to the line.
With 20 seconds to go Wonthaggi had a three point lead and possession was with Bendigo.
