Is 44 degrees the new normal? Is a heatwave that brings temperatures in the 40s for weeks on end – as northern Victoria has been having – going to be an annual event?
This is one of the faces of climate change.
It is not someone else’s issue – it is in the interests of every one of us to reduce our emissions.
That means using renewable energy, using less electricity and using vehicles less. This includes buying things made/grown locally, not thousands of kilometres away.
The opportunities that will arise from a national commitment to zero emissions in, say, 15 years, will be far greater than ‘business as usual’.
It is not a matter of technology, but of political will.
Politicians’ unwillingness to recognise and act on this crisis is reckless at best.
