POLICE and WorkSafe are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a garbage truck driver at Koonwarra last Wednesday morning.
A passer-by alerted emergency services after finding the man crushed between a truck and a fence outside a property on Whittingham Way around 9.30am.
The 56-year-old Mardan man was declared deceased at the scene, and Bass Coast Highway Patrol members closed the road, except to residents, while initial investigations were carried out into the early afternoon.
It’s believed the man had been driving the truck, belonging to waste disposal company Country Cart, but had stopped and exited the vehicle before it rolled forward and pinned him against the fence.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner, as WorkSafe continues to investigate the incident.
In his ‘Mayor’s message’ this week, South Gippsland Shire Cr Don Hill said: “council was saddened to hear of a recent workplace accident involving one of our residents whilst attending work, our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and all concerned in regard to this tragedy – it will no doubt affect many.
“This incident was reported as the 9th workplace fatality this year. With many of us working in high risk areas, these tragedies should remind us to take extra care in our day-to-day activities and on our roads this coming Easter.”
