TEAMS in the Alex Scott and Staff West Gippsland Football Netball Competition (WGFNC) and Bendigo Community Bank Southern Gippsland Junior Football Competition (SGJFC) will wear black armbands this weekend out of respect to Dalyston Football Netball Club’s Campbell Ion.
Campbell and his brother Lucas were driving to Koo Wee Rup Recreation Reserve on Saturday morning when their vehicle was involved in a collision which claimed the life of Campbell and left Lucas in a critical condition.
The under-16 football and 13-and-under and 15-and-under netball matches
between Koo Wee Rup and Dalyston went ahead, but all subsequent football and netball matches between the two clubs scheduled for that day were cancelled, as were Sunday’s junior matches between Dalyston and Corner Inlet.
“Dalyston has since graciously informed the WGFNC of its decision for the under-18, reserves and senior football matches to be considered forfeits and the four premiership points to subsequently be awarded to Koo Wee Rup,” AFL Gippsland said in a statement.
“The WGFNC and respective clubs are investigating the possibility of rescheduling the 17-and-under, C Grade, B Grade and A Grade netball matches, with a decision to be made at a later date.”
The WGFNC, SGJFC and the competitions’ governing body AFL Gippsland has requested all teams wear black armbands in matches taking place this Saturday and Sunday.
AFL Gippsland Region General Manager Ben Joske said it was a simple way for the local sporting community to show its support.
“The collective heart of the Gippsland football and netball community goes out to the Ion family and all those affected by this awful tragedy,” Joske said.
“It’s a timely reminder that community sporting clubs are about bringing people together as much as anything that happens out on the field and it has been extremely heartening to see such an outpouring of grief and so many offers of support over the past few days.”
A GoFundMe page has been setup to raise money for the Ion family and donations can be made at www.gofundme.com/lucus-ion
