THE Leongatha and District Netball Association held its annual junior tournament on Sunday, July 21.
Thirty teams from around Melbourne and Gippsland played a round robin draw of 15-minute games in 11 and under, 13 and under, 15 and under age groups and All Age All Abilities.
In the 15 and under open section, Mid Gippsland regional team won all their games during the rounds.
They won against Leongatha District in the semi-finals and surprisingly met Mountain District Rangers in the grand final, which put higher ranked Wonthaggi out in the semis. Mid Gippsland was the stronger in the grand final winning 15 to the Mountain Rangers’ 6.
The 15 and under reserve grand final was played off between Moe Association and Traralgon Association. Moe 9 points to Traralgon 7.
Wonthaggi Power proved to be the power house in the 13 and under open section – winning all their games in the rounds put the ladder leaders through to the finals.
Inverloch/Kongwak Football Netball Club were close behind at second on the ladder after the rounds but were eliminated by Traralgon in the semi-finals. Wonthaggi Power went on to win over Traralgon in the grand final 12 to 7.
In 13 and under reserve section, Traralgon were ladder leaders after five games in the rounds.
They got through to the grand final defeating Leongatha District in the semi-final and took the major prize in the grand final from Wonthaggi Association. Traralgon 11 defeated Wonthaggi Association 4.
All Ability teams played four games and a grand final which saw Leongatha District the winners for the day from Drouin District. Leongatha 12 defeating Drouin 5.
Nine teams in the 11 and under section played six matches for the day. Visiting teams from Mountain District, Moe and Traralgon were the strongest on the day. No finals were played but the children received a show bag of vixen posters, certificates, small gifts, chocolate and Saputo milk.
