In 2018, I made a number of short videos on the Wonthaggi State Coal Mines which gave information on how to find their locations, view the remnants, and show images of the working mines with statistics and relevant information.
I have repeated the process in 2019 for the privately-operated coal mines at Kilcunda.
The history of these mines is fairly obscure, and many people think that there were only a couple of mines at Kilcunda.
On the contrary, there were many coal mines that operated from the 1870s to the 1950s before mining ceased and shifted their operations to Woolamai until mining there ceased in the 1960s.
I have included the Daly Mine which was the only privately-operated coal mine at Wonthaggi in the early 1900s.
As previously done with the Wonthaggi mine videos, I have put all of the Kilcunda mine videos on YouTube as a method of making information available to interested parties. They are also available for free download on VIMEO.
List of YouTube videos: Kilcunda – the pioneer coal mines; Kilcunda – Mitchell’s coal mine; Kilcunda – The Evans and Thompson coal mine tunnels; Kilcunda – Victorian coal mines; Kilcunda – Coast coal mine; Woolamai coal mines; and Wonthaggi – Daly’s coal mine.
An information booklet on the Kilcunda Mine Area is available from the Wonthaggi and District Historical Society.
