PRICES for well grown lambs reached $160 at the Leongatha VLE Saleyards last Wednesday as the local lamb season got underway.
But there was competition from restockers for undersized lanmbs and in the end as many as 50 per cent of the lambs offered at the first sale of the year were destined to go back into the paddock.
Numbers were good for the first sale with as many as 1200 sheep and lambs offered but the season is set to ramp up after the New Year.
Local growers at the sale admitted that while yields had been good and pasture growth strong, lambs had not grown out quickly in what had been the generally cool conditions through to the middle of December.
