For 52 years, a wonderful annual concert known as Music For The People, has been held at Mossvale Park.
Mossvale Park is a magnificent venue with mature trees, most exceeding 100 years of age and located on the highway mid-way between Leongatha and Mirboo North.
Central in the park is a Sound Shell which provides an ideal setting for bands to play in.
Music For The People is held on the last Sunday in February each year with this year’s event being Sunday 23rd and what a fabulous day of music and entertainment is was.
Those in attendance were treated to a truly memorable concert and as is usually the case, the weather was perfect.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a picnic lunch and chairs or rugs to sit on. It all leads to a wonderful outing for those attending.
I have been attending this annual event for over 40 years and for music lovers, particularly those who enjoy brass and other bands playing a wide variety of music including traditional marches, hymns, swing and Big Band, jazz and even old-time favourites, it’s always a wonderful day.
Until around 15 years ago, this wonderful concert attracted audiences exceeding 1000 people. Senior citizens were bussed in from South Gippsland towns and were looked after by service clubs on the day.
For vast numbers of music lovers in the region, this was a must-attend event.
I am saddened and concerned that this year the audience numbered around only 200 and I feel sorry for those who missed such a fabulous event.
This year the high standard of the concert was exceptional. Attendees were treated to wonderful music from the Marimba Jam Band, South Gippsland Shire Brass Band learners group, South Gippsland Concert Band, Wonthaggi Citizens Band who are the current C Grade Australian Champions, South Gippsland Shire Brass Band and a fabulous finish to the concert by the Streeton Court Big Band. There were also fabulous vocalists who likewise enthralled the audience.
I lament that far greater numbers are not coming along on the day to enjoy this wonderful event and I am wondering if it’s because too few realise when it is on and how fabulous the concert is?
Hopefully your readers will remember when the event is coming up early next year, last Sunday in February. If you live on Phillip Island or at Wonthaggi, Inverloch, Venus Bay, Foster, Leongatha, Korumburra, Mirboo North or anywhere in-between and you love music and a great day out you really should consider attending.
Music for the people is provided free of charge by our wonderful local bands, vocalists, sound system engineers and others and they certainly deserve our support.
I encourage all music-loving South Gippsland residents to consider attending next year.
Alan Brown, Wattle Bank.
