Congratulations to the South Gippsland Shire Council administrators on their decision to mothball the proposed 2020-21 budget due to the coronavirus situation.

The uncertainty and financial impact should be shared through the community including throughout our council.

Council must be working on it but there should be considerable scope to reduce the rate burden with libraries, tourist information centres and other council services no longer provided.

Capital projects need to be deferred, and with the reduced demands on staff, and many being able to work from home, savings in that area should also be possible.

With many in the community having had their incomes disappear, those on high incomes need to lead by example.

Rather than have people unable, or unwilling, to pay and defaulting on their rates, council needs to slash rates now.

As the recent Administrators’ Message declares “All levels of government have a responsibility to serve their citizens…”.
