* Jeanette Harding, July 4, 1935 – April 7, 2020

FORMER South Gippsland Shire mayor and councillor Jeanette Harding died at her son’s home in Manjimup, Western Australia on Tuesday, April 7.

Ms Harding was a councillor from 1997-2003 and again from 2008-2016, serving as mayor from 2001-02 and 2014-15.

She was known as a strong community advocate for the Port Welshpool Long Jetty redevelopment and returned last year to celebrate the official opening.

Ms Harding operated a small nursery in Toora, was a life member of the Toora Bowls Club, a friend and supporter of the Toora Village Studio Gallery, and involved in carpet bowls and pony club.

She campaigned on community representation and needs, employment, tourism and economic development, and services such as roads, infrastructure and welfare. She was also a transport advocate and was a proud supporter of the dairy industry, particularly her role as an elected ambassador of the ViPlus milk factory in Toora.

Ms Harding was the wife of James (deceased), mother and mother-in-law of Michael and Denise, and Hellen and Graeme, grandmother of three and great-grandmother of three.

A notice from South Gippsland Shire Council said she would be truly missed and “we are grateful for her contribution”.

A private funeral will be held at the Toora Cemetery on Monday, April 20 and a public memorial service will be held at a later date.
