LOCAL ladies aren’t letting COVID-19 restrictions stop them hosting Biggest Morning Tea events for the Cancer Council this year, coming up with creative solutions to continue their fundraising efforts while complying with social distancing rules.
With physical gatherings off the cards this year, several local examples of alternative morning tea events have already popped up, such as a virtual gathering via the Zoom application hosted by Inverloch’s Emma Davey over the weekend.
Linda Jefferis of Kardella South was supposed to be hosting her tenth and likely biggest ever morning tea event for the Cancer Council this year, but has also been forced to take her fundraising efforts online, selling handmade jewellery and running a silent auction of original artworks over the next month, as well as marking the occasion on social media on the day her event was originally scheduled to take place at her family’s beef farm, May 22.
Linda got involved with the Biggest Morning Tea to honour the memory of her late cousin Dale, who died of a brain tumour aged 12.
She’s determined to keep it going this year, though she’s sad to miss out on getting together with friends in the farm shed to share her famous lemonade scones.
“It’s definitely not going to be the same, but if I can do something to make a small donation, I’ll be happy,” Linda said.
“I assume a lot of people will just cancel their event and do nothing, but I don’t want people to miss out completely.”
Linda raised over $5000 last year, with around 80 people attending her morning tea, and many Korumburra locals buying raffle tickets sold in the main street.
She’s not expecting to raise that amount this year, but was encouraged to see $160 worth of her handmade earrings snapped up within hours of being posted online.
She hopes to bring the event back bigger and better than ever next year, saving her official tenth anniversary celebrations until then.
“I’m calling this year 9.5,” she joked.
