WHILE in lockdown, many people have decided it’s a good time to catch up on some home improvements. This has resulted in quite a few owner-builders rushing to get their White Card.
The White Card is a nationally recognised and WorkSafe Victoria approved Construction Induction training. The ticket is required to enter a building site for any purpose, including owner-builders.
BCAL’s next White Card course will be on Friday, May 22. Being a theory course, this can be delivered online through Zoom and there is potential for some to attend in-person if that is their preference.
For more information on all of BCAL’s courses and services, please visit www.bcal.vic.edu.au or call 5672 3115 to learn more.
Wonthaggi Community Garden
A quick tour of the garden last week revealed lots of perky new growth thanks to good rain and bursts of sunny weather.
Lorraine has deep green branching broccoli already on the go, and John and Sally have a good crop of broad beans peeping through the soil.
Lettuces and cabbages are coming in under cover to deter determined white cabbage moths. Several beds have coriander, continental parsley and silver beet doing well.
For more information on what veggies and herbs to plant now ,visit the Gardening Australia website or browse Sustainable Gardening Australia’s site for lots of information on growing your own home grown produce.

The state-wide U3A Go Online initiative is booming – or should we say Zooming?
Many groups around Victoria have taken to online video-conferencing for everything from games like mah-jong, to choir and ukulele groups.
Others are branching out to WhatsApp groups and Facebook Messenger’s new Rooms feature which was just launched last week.
The handy thing about the latter option is that members who already have a Facebook account will be able to join in without having to download or learn yet another new platform.
