I refer to Councillor Les Larke’s letter to the SGST of June 2, 2020, ‘Talking about shire finances’.
I have been looking at the Bass Coast Shire finances for a good number of years now and am happy to report that they are in extremely good shape.
I give full credit to the shire staff and the audit committee for this.
My concern is that we are too conservative in our financial management. We have huge infrastructure issues in the shire that are not being addressed.
We could expand the balance sheet by borrowing more money for infrastructure. We could go to the state and federal governments to match our borrowings and be able to make inroads into the infrastructure issues in the Bass Coast.
The longer we leave the infrastructure spending, the more it will cost. We live in extraordinary times with the lowest interest rates on record as it makes sense in borrowing money now.
