Good news again for those concerned about climate change from Australian Geographic Guide to the Weather.
On page 110: “About 6000 years ago the average temperature was some 4 degrees F (2 degrees C) higher than today and there was greater rainfall. These conditions fostered the birth of agriculture in Egypt and Mesopotamia which led to surplus food stocks being kept for the first time.”
I am no expert, but if these experts are correct, and if we are having higher temperatures and higher temperatures do lead to more rainfall via the precipitation cycle, there’s no need to alarm ourselves or our children.

Don’t worry about climate change

Very naive attitude. Yes there will be more rainfall in places because as the earth heats up evaporation is greater. Then we get these large dumps of rain. If you look at recent rainfall records you will note that there are far more 25mm plus falls happening. Unfortunately this causes flooding and most of the water races back into the ocean causing further damage to our coastline, already damaged by the rising sea level – from the melting poles. The other issue is that this rainfall is predominantly coastal so the amount of productive farmland is greatly reduced. Yes the small strip along the coast might become more fertile but we have chosen to put our towns and cities in these areas. And then, in between the evaporation and deluge, as the water builds in the atmosphere we get the bushland drying out very quickly and then we have much more fierce bushfires. Also you must remember that 6000 years ago there were billions and billions less people on the earth so the comparison is not really very accurate. So YES we certainly DO need to worry about climate change – but we need to do much more than that – we need to take action!
