What a pity some Bass Coast councillors took criticism from the local ratepayers’ group so personally, as reported in the Sentinel-Times last week.
Whilst Cr Rothfield can rightly claim that the current group of councillors has performed better than their predecessors, it has to be said this was from an exceptionally low base.
The very reason the ratepayers’ association exists is because past councillors took their election as a licence to push personal agendas and prejudices against the wishes of the people they were elected to represent.
The association was never going to be a cheerleader group for council.
Current councillors are certainly not beyond criticism. The fact that livestreaming was only introduced as a result of COVID-19, and a majority of councillors still refuse to allow their votes to be publicly recorded, is evidence that we still have councillors who refuse to be held accountable to ratepayers for their decisions.
Unlike councillors, officers of the ratepayers’ association do not get paid thousands of dollars, nor do they have access to the massive resources of the council.
If they occasionally express themselves clumsily, I forgive them. I would expect fair-minded councillors to do the same.
