Bass Coast Shire Council is playing games with ratepayers over its feigned support for belated attempts by some residents to protect native vegetation and wildlife from the threat of large-scale sand extraction around Grantville.

The regional Sand Extraction Strategy has been in place since 1996 when it was endorsed by the state government and was incorporated into the Bass Coast Planning Scheme.

Community members spent months with shire and government officers as part of the working group which developed the strategy. Detailed surveys and expert assessments lurk in shire archives and could have been used at the recent planning tribunal hearing.
