Councillors of Bass Coast Shire recently decided to waste ratepayers’ funds on developing a sand extraction strategy for the shire even though one has been part of its planning scheme since 1996.
The Regional Sand Extraction Strategy, Lang Lang to Grantville, was developed with wide input from the community, the sand extraction industry, various government departments, professional consultants and relevant officers from three shires.
The strategy was finally signed off by the then Minister for Planning Robert Maclellan.
Developing a new strategy will squander many thousands of dollars for no purpose. Full environmental assessments were undertaken at the time with the help of the shire.
