It was a relief to read James Fawcett’s letter to the editor [note 9 June The Mirror and 8 June SG Sentinel Times), exposing the elephant in the room of former councillors dismissed in 2019 seeking to run again in Council elections in October.

South Gippsland deserves a Council that is free from bullying, self-interested decision-making and mates deals. Our Shire needs councillors who can work together across Council, be accountable to the electorate and respectful of staff, and follow the principles of good governance.

We need fresh faces and genuine candidates for our new Council, with no axe to grind and no tainted history in Council. It would be great to see a more diverse Council this time – and some younger people stepping up. Elections are in late October, with nominations opening in early August. We must not recycle the dismissed council.
