I am very pleased to see the upgrade of Bair Street is nearing completion. The contractors have performed magnificently in carrying out a complex task with minimal disruption for traders and pedestrians.
As we watch the streetscape evolve with trees and furniture, I hope we will also see bike racks (hopefully with interesting design applied to make them a feature of the street) installed to help cyclists on the expanded Great Southern Rail Trail visit the Leongatha town centre.
To fully capitalise on this likely extra pedestrian traffic, we should now look in detail at the pedestrian bridge that will take visitors up from the railyards into Bair Street as well as the safe crossing of Roughead Street on the GSRT.
We should not have to wait for stage two of the Leongatha Heavy Vehicle Bypass before we get an effective traffic light system in the area of “Kamikaze” corner so that we can keep our pedestrian visitors safe.
