IF YOU’RE a hobby farmer and on the lookout for supplies, The Dainty Gumboot in Korumburra is the place for you.
The hobby farm supplier has been open online for eight months but high demand saw them open a shop in Korumburra on July 1.
At first, they were just looking for a factory to store their highly sought-after products but the place they found had a retail permit attached, so they thought why not open a shop as well.
Directors Sherree Owen and Emma Brown knew their products would fly off the shelves as soon as they opened.
“We both have hobby farms and from personal experiences there’s not much around for small hobby farms,” Sherree said.
“Most of the bigger companies only cater for 100 sheep or cattle, so we found personally that it was almost impossible to find smaller products for just a handful of hobby farm animals.”
“So, everything had to be done online and hobby farmers have jobs so if you’ve only got one day to be able to do things, you want to be able to walk into a shop and get the products that you need.”
And they also wanted to make sure their products erred on the boutique side of things as well.
“We’ve just had a bit more catering to women farmers as well, women who enjoy getting out in the paddock and being with the farm animals just as much.”
And Sherree said the support from the community has been fantastic since opening.
“It’s been really good, we’ve had lots of kind words from people coming into the shop and heaps of people have been visiting us and giving us suggestions on things they’d like to see in the shop.
“We’re really open to hearing feedback from the community as to what they feel like they need.”
They’re also making a big effort to support other small businesses in the area.
“We’re trying to stock a lot of the local produce as well as free range eggs and we’re also trying to support local people who are crafty and artistic.”
And Sherree had some simple advice for any budding hobby farmers out there.
“Definitely have a look around and figure out what you need, and just know that you don’t always have to buy everything in huge amounts.”
For example, most stock feed businesses will only stock 10 kilogram or five-kilogram drums, whereas The Dainty Gumboot also offers 250 milligram drums.
And they’re products don’t just stop at hobby farming.
“We also sell gifts for people, and we cater for pets too,” Sherree said.
“We’ve got a really good treat wall for dogs and cats that has 100 per cent Australian owned treats in it.
“We really owned to be Australian home grown and owned and we try our hardest to stick to those suppliers too.”
And finally, they’re pet friendly. So, you’re allowed to bring your furry friend down and try out their range of pet supplies.
