POLICE may not be setting up their ‘Ring of Steel’ around regional Victoria again but they did return to their former position on the Bass Highway at Lang Lang on Friday, October 1, in time to catch Melbourne metropolitan visitors from gaining access to Bass Coast and South Gippsland locations for the weekend.

Local traders, including those on Phillip Island, say there are a lot of ‘Melbourne people’ in the area at the moment and police reportedly turned away dozens of would-be Melbourne visitors at a check point established at Grantville recently.

On the AFL Grand Final long weekend, the area was especially busy and while there can be reasons why people with Melbourne drivers’ licences can be here, the concern is that many of them were here illegally, understandably tired and frustrated with the length of the Melbourne lockdown.

More details later on the number of Melbourne metropolitan people who were turned back by police.
