THE scaffolding has gone up and the historic ‘Top of the Town’ building in Korumburra is set to come down this week.
The demolition of the prominent building, at 33 Bridge Street, is due to start on Tuesday this week (today) after being delayed for a few weeks.
It was purchased by the South Gippsland Shire Council, reportedly for $480,000, to clear the way for the development of the Korumburra Community Hub.
The block was the site of the town’s first wooden structure, the Temperance Hotel, which predictably burnt down in 1898.
The present day building was built early the last century.

The demolition of the Top of the Town building is one of the first stages of the the Korumburra Streetscape project.

As part of the redevelopment of the Little Commercial Street precinct council purchased the site, which has been secured to help facilitate traffic movements and parking arrangements around the new Korumburra Community Hub.
