THIS year’s Mayor Charity Appeal, ‘Run Brett Run’, brought the community together on Saturday morning at Wonthaggi Plaza raising $45,000 for Ambulance Victoria.

Mayor Cr Brett Tessari ran 10km in 59:10 minutes on the treadmill donated by Voyage Fitness Wonthaggi.

MICA senior team manager Duncan Roney and Mayor Cr Brett Tessari worked in partnership with president of the Rotary Club of Wonthaggi, Ray

McCurry, to reach a target of $100,000 for Ambulance Victoria to purchase five CorPuls machines for the local ambulance service.

“A CorPuls is a life-saving mechanical chest compression device that will assist our local paramedics to provide the best possible care to any patient that is suffering from a cardiac arrest and each device is approximately $21,000,” Duncan said.

Mayor Cr Brett Tessari shared his gratitude for the sponsors and locals who generously donated to the appeal to help the Bass Coast branches and the MICA response unit to achieve their goal of five CorPuls machines.

“Today we’ll aim for $42,000 – that’s two CorPuls machines for our local paramedics,” Brett said.

Mark Harrison, Kim O’Connor and Lou Fuataga of SJD Homes surprised the crowd by generously donating $5000 to the appeal from the SJD Foundation.

Throughout the morning, advanced life support paramedic Kerry Senior showed locals how the CorPuls will assist the CPR process and helped teach local children and adults CPR on test dummies.

“It is vital for everybody to know the basics of CPR and today we would like to raise awareness of the GoodSAM Responder App,” Kerry said.

The GoodSAM (Smartphone Activated Medic) is a free global app that alerts first aid qualified and medically trained responders when somebody nearby is in cardiac arrest, giving them the location of the emergency and the location of the nearest available Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).
