Thank you for last week’s editorial on Bass Coast Council’s attitude failing to answer questions at their last council meeting. Additionally, articles relating to South Gippsland Shire Council headed “South Gippsland Shire CEO delegation increased by $500k” and “Volunteer policy now CEO’s responsibility” tend to suggest a more hands-off approach from our elected councillors.

I don’t know all the ins and outs of these issues but failing to respond to community questions and giving more control to the bureaucracy is not what we want from those we elect.

It may be convenient for the administration to triple the amount it is authorised to spend unchecked from $250,000 to $750,000 (with a $3 million limit for emergencies) but l’d like our councillors to be informed, and have a say, on these goings on.

It is hard for councillors, especially new ones, to be on top of issues and not to just be led by the bureaucracy, but that’s what we need them to do.

Steve Finlay, Leongatha.
