South Gippsland on flood watch (again)

THE State Emergency Service has just issued a new 'Riverine Flood' advice notice for South Gippsland rivers (at 2.58pm today, Monday, August 22).

It follows a week of road closures and flood events, across the region last week, kicking off with more than 100ml of rain across the catchment.

They're not expecting as much as that in this latest burst, but with the catchment already super saturated and all of the rain likely to runoff, the SES is raising the level of community awareness.

"Minor flooding is possible from Monday evening, August 22, for catchments in the Flood Watch area." which extends from Phillip Island in the west to Sale in the east, also extending up into the hills above Warragul and the Latrobe Valley.

"A cold front is crossing Victoria during Monday bringing rainfall to the Flood Watch area during Monday and Tuesday morning.

"Catchments in the Flood Watch area are wet as a result of the recent rainfall with elevated river levels within some catchments.

"Rainfall totals of 15mm-30mm with isolated totals up to 50mm are forecast over the Flood Watch area during Monday and Tuesday.

"River level rises are areas of minor flooding are possible in parts of Gippsland, Central and North East Victoria from Monday evening."

The SES has warned that roads may be closed and has also repeated the warning not to drive on flooded roads.
