Final service for Rev. Deacon Wendy Elson

IN A heartfelt farewell service this past Sunday, Rev. Deacon Wendy Elson reflected on the biblical story of Queen Esther, drawing powerful connections to the themes of prayer, petition, and community support. The congregation gathered to celebrate Elson’s impactful ministry, focusing on Esther’s courageous plea to save her people; with the service concluding with a release of ties with Rev Fiona Morrison.

Rev. Elson emphasised how Esther’s story highlights the importance of standing together in times of crisis, a message that resonates deeply in today’s world.

“Like Esther, we are called to advocate for those in need, to speak truth to power, and to rely on the strength of our community,” she told the congregation.

This reflection served as a reminder of the critical role of prayer and the power of communal support in facing challenges.

Rev Deacon Wendy Elson has been in placement to the Uniting Church since December 2019 in Wonthaggi and Inverloch – a part of the shearwater team, whilst too working at Bass Coast Health as spiritual care coordinator and undergoing her PHD for the past 18 months with the University of Divinity in Melbourne.

The service also featured a reading from the book of James, which reinforced the message of healing through prayer.

“The prayers of the righteous are powerful and effective,” Rev. Elson noted, encouraging attendees to come together not just in worship but in action, echoing James’s call for communal support in times of need.

As Rev. Elson prepares to embark on a new chapter, she urged the congregation to continue fostering inclusivity within the church.

“Our faith must be rooted in action – whether that means providing shoes for those in need or advocating for justice in our community,” she stated.

The role of deacons was also a focal point of the service, underscoring their vital function as servants who bridge the gap between the church and the world.

“Deacons are the hands and feet of Christ, bringing our faith into tangible actions,” Rev. Elson affirmed.

Reflecting on the evolving nature of the church, she
reminded attendees that adaptability and compassion are essential in today’s society.

“As we move forward, let us remember that we are not just a church in isolation, but a vibrant community engaged with the world around us.”

The service concluded with prayers, hymns, and heartfelt tributes to Rev. Elson’s years of dedicated service. Attendees left inspired to carry forward her legacy of love, action, and unwavering faith, ready to continue the work of the church in their community and beyond.
