Glorious Island weather for start of Gippsland Cycling Tour

THE Tour of Gippsland Cycle event kicked off in glorious spring weather at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit on Wednesday, October 2 with road racing events for Under 19 Men, Under 19 Women and AusCycling National Road Series (NRS) racing for men and women.

Stage1 of the NRS Tour of Gippsland, U19 Men’s racing over 16 laps of 71.2km started with an eager 28 starters wasting no time getting into continuous attacks with eventually a group of four breaking clear building up a dangerous time gap of 38 seconds mostly animated by Christian Tuminello @cobra9cyclingteam before been gradually reeled in by a combination of teams just after bell lap with a big bunch gallop taking up the whole width of the main racetrack with Jameson Key @vandamracing taking a convincing win with the arms raised up from Jonas Shelverton @teambridgelane and 3rd, Alexander Hewe-Avia Rudyco.

Tomorrow will be a double stage day with a Stage2 ITT over 2 laps over 8.9km and Stage3 Road Race run clockwise over 10 laps of 44.5km.

Stage1 of the @auscyclingaus NRS Tour of Gippsland U19 Women’s competition was first off the mark also competing in beautiful sunny conditions around the @phillipislandcircuit over 14laps of 63.2km.

In a nail biting finish it looked like Ava Wilson @butterfields_racing had the win but was pipped on the line by the NRS leader, Emma Ochoa @meridianbluecycling and 3rd place to Ava’s Butterflieds team mate, Ava Schmidtke.

Stage2 & 3 tomorrow will be a double stage day with first up the Individual time trial will be over 2 laps of 8.9km & the afternoons circuit road race run clock wise over 10 laps of 44.5km.

The senior men’s and women’s races were to follow.

Tomorrow, Thursday, October 3 there’s more racing at the GP track with individual time trials starting at 8am and more road racing from 9.45am.

Then on Friday, October 4, the riders switch to the road for the criterium event starting at Beach Road, Rhyll at 9am.

Jameson Key had a convincing win in the first Under 19 Men's event of the Tour of Gippsland on Wednesday.
