No apprenticeship for koala Frank

1 min read

A koala walked into the workshop; no seriously!
Koala ‘Frank’ stopped in for a job as a mechanic in the service section of the combined Ford and Mitsubishi dealership in Leongatha.
That was after pondering his career move while stationed in the middle of the road.
While he’s the first koala to check out the workshop, animal visits occur quite often, including a kitten having to be removed from a dashboard and a possum from a box of parts.
Animal lover Alix Veale, who is starting the second year of his apprenticeship, has become the go-to person in such situations.
The team decided Frank was the right name for the furry vehicle enthusiast, but unable to take on another apprentice encouraged a move back into the outdoors.
It is presumed Frank went on a wander from the nearby Great Southern Rail Trail.
However, after leaving the dealership he crossed the small street he entered from, climbing up a tree over the road from Smith’s Hardware.
Wildlife Victoria was contacted, a volunteer arriving to relocate the koala to a safer spot away from traffic, having attended five or six koala callouts in the last couple of weeks.
She observed that more koalas are coming into town on hot days, noting they will normally come down and head to a suitable tree but the risk on this occasion was too great.
While Frank sniffed the leaves in his new surrounds, he established it wasn’t a gum tree.
The volunteer was having to be patient during the Sentinel-Times’ visit, the small explorer venturing further up the tree, unimpressed by the presence of people.
