THERE’S-nothing so lonesome, morbid or drear than a town with no pub.
They may be putting on a brave face but there’s no doubt local residents in Toora, and the many people who visit the town are missing their favourite watering hole at the Royal Standard Hotel.
It was with great sadness that the Royal Standard Hotel advised patrons earlier this month that due to financial difficulties the Toora pub had entered into liquidation.
The company running the Royal Standard Hotel said it was being wound-up, and the pub’s assets sold to pay outstanding debts to creditors.
The owners apologised for any inconvenience and thanked the local community and staff for their support and efforts over the past eight years.
“It’s been a great ride with you all,” posted the owners.
A registered liquidator has been appointed to manage the administration process.
“Moving forward it is hoped to secure new management and have the pub operating again,” said the owners.
Staff have been overwhelmed by messages of support and love.
Christina and Chris from Upper Beaconsfield sitting outside the locked doors of the Royal Standard Hotel said they will miss their Guinness on tap at the Toora pub.
“It’s sad, this is a beautiful little town.
“We stayed several weeks ago and enjoyed it so much we decided to come back, but the pub was closed.”
Sheryl Jones from the Toora Bazaar Market is also saddened by the closure of the pub.
“Really sad.”
“Every town needs a pub,” said Ms Jones.
“Guys go to the pub and people go there for social functions.
“It’s the oldest pub in the area.
“We really can’t lose it.”
Shelley Panton from the Panton Store hopes a new owner for the Toora pub will bring new life into the town.
“No-one wants to see the pub closed.
“It’s a bad time for the current owners but it’s an opportunity for someone else to take it on.
”Hopefully it won’t be long before a new operator sees the scope in the region,” said Ms Panton.
Ellen Fabel from Foster remembers the good times at the Royal Standard Hotel.
“It’s sad, I’ve had some really lovely dinners down there.”
Stephen Scoglio from the Tooradeli says a town needs a pub.
“The more businesses in town the better.
“We’re just hoping it gets back up and running as soon as possible.
“We’re waiting for the bakery to find a baker and the pizza shop is for sale.”
“If they were all up and running it would be great for the town.”
Toora resident Lachy Bowden is disappointed the Royal Standard Hotel has closed.
“The town feels like it has lost a real asset.
“It’s a shock to the system.”
“I hope the pub re-opens,” said Mr Bowden.
“Hopefully someone will come through and renovate it and inspire the town.
“The Toora RSL and Toora Bowls Club have both extended their trading hours.”
Marcus Welsh blamed governments for ridiculous alcohol taxes.
“Publicans have no choice but to pass it on to the customers,” said Mr Welsh.
Shelley Panton posted on Facebook that we have our fingers crossed for you all that someone comes along and buys the pub very soon and the doors can open again.
“There is an angel out there who would love this opportunity to revive the old dame.”
