Award-winning iconic home

THIS award-winning house by architect Peter Maddison of Grand Design fame has to be the most photographed and written about house on the Island. Its groundbreaking design was the winner of RAIA in 1995 and continues to attract attention today.

It is the most recognised house on Phillip Island for good reason.

The property sits on the cliff top of Surf Beach, with arguably the best view of the ocean you will ever see. Positioned to look straight out to Pyramid Rock, one is captivated by the waves crash along the islands rugged coastline. A boardwalk across the road allows for easy access to the ocean beach. 184 The Esplanade is an incredible location of natural beauty.
The house sits on a corner allotment, of almost a quarter acre in size, surrounded by a well-established garden.

The main house was designed to take full advantage of the views; to open up and embrace summer living and close down and snuggle up for wild winters. Standing like a sentinel on guard, it sees everything from Cape Woolamai to Pyramid Rock and is a full three storeys high. With a spiral staircase that links the floors, it gathered the name the ‘Lighthouse’ by the local surfers.

The home features a ground floor master bedroom and bathroom that opens out through French doors to a private courtyard complete with a circular saltwater heated plunge pool.

Up the spiral staircase you are immediately greeted with a 18ft high celling, with double French doors that just beckon you out to a large entertainer’s deck, that soaks up the view. It is here, that you can feel like you are actually on a boat, the ocean is so close, you can actually hear the waves crashing on the shoreline. The room is open plan living, with a contemporary kitchen, complete with Miele appliance and of course an open fireplace.

The third level you will be greeted with a full roof top deck. This allows for a 360-degree view of the Island, captivating ocean, rural and bay views. At night to entertain under a galaxy of stars, is something incredibly special.

There is a separate fully contained guest pavilion, also designed by Peter Maddison. This was added in later years and allows space for visiting friends and family. The Pavilion opens to a linking courtyard that is the perfect place to retreat, entertain and enjoy the beautifully designed garden, that features spectacular lighting by the renowned ‘Gardens at Night’ company.
