Family rivalry lifts the roof at Leongatha swim meet

South Gippsland’s Splash aquatic centre in Leongatha echoed to the deafening roar of cheering family, friends and supporters at Meet 4 of the Gippsland summer swimming series.

One hundred and ten swimmers from throughout the region competed at Splash with keen family rivalry amongst the Leongatha squad.

“It was great to see our young swimmers here having a go in the twenty-five-metre races,” said Coach Dylan.

There were plenty of smiles amongst local families especially in the mixed relay event which saw siblings competing against other families.

The Smyth family narrowly defeated the Croatto family in a thrilling finish almost lifting the roof off the swim centre.

Full of cheering swimmers the Splash bleachers reverberated with the excitement.

The relay was won by half of one family, swimming with the other half of the same family.

“It was a chance for the younger swimmers to compete in a number of races, at the one local event,” said Dylan.

“Being able to get over their nerves and become familiar with the process of competing in a pool they know well, will enable them to have a lot more confidence going to another pool in coming weeks.”

Several older swimmers had a go at events they do not normally get to do in the busy short course season giving them a chance to see what sort of time they could achieve.

The over twenty-five men’s race was fiercely contested with some very close times.

The South Gippsland Bass Swimming Club is now looking forward to having competitive relays in the Gippsland Championships.

Meet 4 was also the last chance for juniors to swim a time to be considered for the district 21 team which competes at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in Albert Park against other regional teams.
