THE Rotary Clubs in the Bass Coast and South Gippsland region are partnering with renowned football legend, David Parkin and other prostate cancer survivors to hold an information evening at the Wonthaggi Club on Thursday, May 25, from 6.30pm.
“The Wonthaggi and Leongatha region have a higher death rate from prostate cancer than the Australian average according to the Australian Cancer Atlas" said Alan White of the Bayside Prostate Cancer Support Group.
“Men need to understand the importance of regular health check-ups, which should include the blood test for PSA, Prostate Specific Antigen.”
According to www.canceraustralia.gov.au, there are more than 20,000 males that are diagnosed each year, which is double the diagnoses of skin cancer.
“Raising awareness for the health and wellbeing of our community members is extremely important”, stated Mary Dortmans of the Rotary Club of Leongatha.
David Parkin, AFL great, will be speaking at the event. David is the Patron for the Male Bag Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation promoting men’s health. David was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent surgery in March 2009.
“It is great to have David come and share his experience and raise awareness” said Rosa Turner from the Rotary Club of Inverloch. “Hopefully we have a big turn out to the event.”
Tickets for the event will be $25 per person, which will include a two course meal.
All proceeds will go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
Information and ticket sales will be available by contacting the Rotary Clubs in the Bass Coast and South Gippsland area, or by emailing rotaryclubwonthaggi@gmail.com.
