THE community turned out in droves to mark the first of many events celebrating 100 years of the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre on Saturday February 15.
It was certainly ‘On at the Union’ as the theatre came to life with a performance by the Wonthaggi Citizens’ Band followed by a screening of Richard Lowenstein’s renowned film, Strikebound, which is about the area’s coal industry during the1930s and was released in the 1980s.
The night was kicked off with a Welcome to Country detailing the region’s indigenous people and their cultural heritage.
There were many notable attendees such as Richard Lowenstein and cast members, with Bass Coast Shire mayor Rochelle Halstead also acknowledging Bass MP Jordan Crugnale and other members of council in attendance.
“Tonight, we are making history, we are officially launching the 2025 program of the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre, 100 years since the original union theatre opened its doors, bringing art, theatre, film and community celebrations to Wonthaggi and surrounds,” she said.
“For 2025, this centre will revert to the original name of the Union Theatre for this centenary year, under the banner of ‘It’s On At The Union’.
“This year will be a spectacular showcase of talent; it is truly a once in a lifetime celebration.”
