Children play at Coal Creek

CHILDREN were getting their faces painted, petting baby animals, making flower bracelets and craft items and listening to stories at Coal Creek Community Park and Museum today.
Childrens Week is celebrated every year and this years theme was “Children have the right to relax, play and take part in activities they enjoy”.
They did just that, with over 100 families attending the Korumburra event hosted by the South Gippsland Shire Council, in partnership with Myli – My Community Library.
The event was a celebration of childhood and children and provided an opportunity for families and children to come together and have fun in the community.
“It’s fantastic that families from the whole of South Gippsland made the effort to come today given that the weather wasn’t looking very good,” said Michelle Donohue, Supported Playgroup Facilitator from South Gippsland Shire Council.
“Families still came out in droves with their children to celebrate their childrens right to play and interact with others in the community.”
The children and family services team from Council and members of Myli came together to organise and host the free event which was also supported by a $700 government grant.
It was the first major Childrens Week event held since covid and the team from council spoke about the importance of providing outdoor play for children because of the positive impact it has on all aspects of development.
They were pleased to be able to offer activities that incorporated lots of elements of nature play on the day and that were accessible to all.
“We make it a free event to make sure that all families have the opportunity during childrens week to come and celebrate,” explained Michelle.
It also provided an opportunity for families to have a look at Coal Creek Community Park and Museum and for the venue to showcase its great indoor and outdoor spaces and its capacity for hosting community events.
