FOR ALL those passionate about upcycling and finding a bargain, the nationwide Garage Sale Trail is on again this weekend, coinciding with National Recycling Week and many locals are jumping on board.
Some South Gippslander’s will be proffering their pre loved wares and others will be on the hunt for unique, one of a kind treasures or even just those regular house hold appliances, perhaps even a dunny or two.
And Natasha Wood of Little Luscious Farm in Mirboo North has a couple to sell.
“This is not glamorous and I'm a little bit embarrassed, but I had picked up a whole lot of brand new toilets. I went to get one and then I got six. For free. I paid for one and then they said take the rest of them. So, I am selling two of them,” explains Natasha.
“I don't really want to go down history as the woman who was obsessed with having too many toilets. Maybe that's that one random thing where someone's like, you know what, I do want to upgrade the toilet.”
Natasha will have thousands of other things on offer too. Her shearing shed is full of homewares, ornaments, picture and photo frames, crockery, books, records, clothing, shoes, accessories, makeup, fabrics, arts and craft, party decorations, tennis racquets and many other random things for people to browse and buy.
Natasha and her partner moved to Mirboo North about a year ago and with that came a lifestyle change and the accumulation of items that they no longer need, and other things that they do; and with sustainability becoming a globally important issue, they are looking to upcycle where they can.
“We're sort of on a bit of a quest, actually, to do our entire farm with that in mind. So, we've been already hunting down items for ourselves, and now passing things on that we can't use,” said Natasha.
“Every week now, I'm picking up bricks for free, windows, anything that we can use in this part of our life; and it's time to move on everything we've had before.”
“We just want to keep using what we can find that other people are throwing out that may be of use.”
Natasha encourages others to jump on board and hold their own sale, to help minimise waste, support sustainable living and pass on things that others might want or need or even just fall in love with on sight.
“I’d say, don’t feel overwhelmed about having a garage sale. You might not think it's something worthy, but someone like me would probably love that and like to buy it from you. A lot of people say, no one would want this, and then they take it to the tip. Well, just give it a go.”
There is also some extra cash to be made from selling unused items and Natasha is putting any money made from the sale towards creating a bit more infrastructure for the flower farm they are developing.
“That’s our big thing,” said Natasha, and alongside the dunnies, flowers will also be available to buy during the sale.

Welshpool pub high and dry
A DRY pub? The Welshpool Hotel might be high and dry but that’s just how licensee Skye Dubignon likes it. Concrete floors, the only remaining evidence of the devastating Boxing Day floods last year. “We’re just waiting for the insurance to be...
