THERE is lots of activity at Leongatha Community House, with its current manager Nina Kane relishing her role and keen to see as many people as possible take advantage of the opportunities on offer.

They include new activities, such as ‘Cooking with Kids’ sessions that inspire youngsters in the community house kitchen, chair-based Zumba exercise, mixed media workshops and conversations in Italian.

A ‘Multicultural Friendship Group’ has been established, which kicked off on Wednesday May 3 and runs from 1.30-3pm on the first and third Wednesdays each month.

Leongatha Community House volunteer Stacey Fennell started the weekly ‘Cooking with Kids’ sessions that run each Wednesday between 4-6pm.

“It’s a great place and good to meet new people,” she said.

While only a couple of kids attended the first session, Ida and Darcy clearly had a ball making ‘Pancake Spaghetti’ and proved dab hands in the kitchen.

The treat, made with pancake batter, was enjoyed with fruit and other toppings.

Slow-paced ‘Zumba Gold’ classes kick off on Tuesday May 9, running weekly at 9am on Tuesdays.

Mixed Media workshops also run on Tuesdays, between 5-7pm, with participants learning how to make cards, scrapbooking and enjoying working with a wide range of materials and methods.

Members of Leongatha Community House’s Tuesday and Thursday craft groups will be selling their wares at a Saturday May 20 Cottage Market, running from 10am until 3pm.

“Each item is unique and hand made by our participants,” manager Nina said.

Money raised through the market will go to the community house, helping it run its programs.

Nina was born and raised in Ukraine, living in Russia for many years, giving her a strong understanding of migrants and the challenges they face.

She has extensive experience as a lawyer and says that background assists her to negotiate and problem solve in her current position.

“I love what I’m doing,” Nina said of the opportunity her job provides to make a positive difference to the lives of community members.
