EXCAVATION work to prepare for construction of the new kindergarten building at Korumburra Primary School provided a surprise reminder of the past, revealing the remains of the school’s swimming pool that closed in 1964.
It sparked memories for the president of Korumburra Historical Society Bob Newton who attended the school as a youngster and swam in the pool.
He said it was a popular spot in the summer that played an important role in young people learning to swim.
Some of Bob’s mates have shared their memories of the pool with him, saying they earned their ‘Heralds’ there.
That referred to a learn to swim campaign run during the 1960s by The Herald, with certificates awarded to those who successfully swam the required distance.
Bob said the establishment of the town pool led to the closure of the school one.
