PHILLIP Island Boardriders Club (PIBC) have submitted their response to the Bass Coast Shire’s draft Fair Access Policy and Action Plan.
PIBC have stated that they are committed to increase and improve opportunities for women, girls and diverse groups in surf sport and recreation within Bass Coast and beyond.
From an organisational structure, PIBC consider themselves leading the field with female representation on the board, executive committee, governance and in sporting competitions participation.
Once described as a “boys club'' this season's PIBC’s president, treasurer, secretary, media coordinator, facilities coordinator and supergroms captain all identify as female. Of PIBC’s 20-person main committee, 11 identify as female and 9 male.
PIBC have recently adjusted their membership forms to include nominated pronouns instead of gender, as another step to improved inclusivity. Treasurer Jo O’Reilly Stubbs shared from next financial year and season the club will have more accurate data on the membership base, and progress to further work towards the inclusivity goals.
“This action was recommended by one of our committee members Alisha Hill, who is also a mother of one of our 23/24 Supergroms.”
PIBC recognise that by creating a welcoming environment for women, girls and other diverse groups - this can remove barriers to participation in sports clubs, increase membership and maintain a positive culture.
PIBC have many options for women in club competitions:
• Supergroms (5yr to approx. 14 yrs)
• Cadet Females (Under 16)
• Junior Females (Under 18)
• Senior Women’s (35+)
• Open Women’s
• Longboarding events
In addition PIBC have also created girls’ development under the youth development program, a health wellbeing program (surf and yoga), and in partnership with Surfing Victoria and Surfing Australia offer subsidised surf industry courses such as judge and contest director accreditation to enable regional youth career pathways.
PIBC always welcome new members for committee, surfing, and social membership. Further information on to be involved with PIBC is at www.pibc.com.au or email contact@pibc.com.au
